CARUTHERSVILLE – Gov. Matt Blunt today visited his
DREAM Initiative’s newest designee, Caruthersville, to discuss how his
revitalization program will help the community create new growth and economic
development opportunities.

“I created the DREAM initiative to ensure that our small and medium-sized
communities have their fair share of state support to help meet their full
potential.  My DREAM program makes a long term investment in the heart of Missouri’s economy that
works to revitalize and re-build vibrant downtowns across our state,” Gov.
Blunt
said. “DREAM gives Caruthersville the opportunity to incorporate
their river heritage into their downtown renewal plans.”

            “We are very
pleased to have been selected as a DREAM community. We look forward to working
with the various departments from the state towards developing our downtown,
increasing the number of retail establishments, and stimulating job growth,” Mayor
Diane Sayre
said.

Caruthersville hopes that the DREAM designation will spur even more local
volunteer effort and renewed vigor from its residents. Caruthersville has
completed a plan that addresses the linking of the riverfront, the historic
downtown, and the Casino Aztar.  A walking trail along the scenic Mississippi River has been completed.  The next
phase is to upgrade and redevelop the streetscape along Ward Avenue all the way to the flood
wall.  An observation deck on the riverfront is also planned; this will be
a receiving point for tourist boats on the Mississippi and be a visible reminder of
Caruthersville’s river heritage which dates back to the mid-nineteenth century.
