Congratulations to Zack Preston on graduation from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy. Zack is the nephew of former MGC employee Blaine Preston.

Zack Preston was part of the 105th recruit class.

MGC Senior Office Support Assistant Cindy Spangler is headed off into the wild blue yonder. Cindy has worked for MGC since August of 1999 and has decided it’s time to retire. Congrats Cindy. We will miss you!

Regional Conference on Addiction Convenes for 15^th Year

This year marks the 15^th annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse. What began as a training opportunity in 2003 has evolved into a meeting of minds focused on strengthening community-based treatment programs throughout the Midwest region. This year’s conference takes place June 20-22 at the Kansas City Airport Hilton.

“We are still in the midst of a nationwide opioid crisis, and the World Health Organization just recently classified video gaming as a mental health condition,” said Carol Spiker, president of the Midwest Consortium on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse. “This conference is as relevant as ever.”

Spiker said that this year’s theme, “Inspiring Recovery-Focused Outcomes,” encompasses a universal goal shared by all healthcare providers.

“Recovery is the end result that clinicians and healthcare providers strive for with their clients afflicted with addiction,” said Spiker. “Too often, the weight of ever-evolving public health challenges can feel overwhelming, and this year’s conference hopes to broaden our attendees’ understanding of these issues.”

The Midwest Consortium recognizes a five-state region – Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma – but attendees from across the country attend the Conference each year. For a complete list of workshop sessions, presenters and conference information, visit MCPGSA.org.
