Underage Gambling Penalties

From WBAL.COM

Monday, September 30, 2013
                        Ashley Williams and WBAL-TV

Officials say more than two dozen instances of underage gambling at Maryland casinos will cost casino operators tens of thousands of dollars in fines.

According to officials, a consent agreement signed last week by gambling regulators and earlier by Maryland Live casino marks the state's first financial penalty for underage violations.

Under the agreement, Maryland Live agreed to pay $20,000 for four incidents of underage gambling. Soon Hollywood Casino in Perryville will pay $10,000 for two similar incidents.

Authorities say there have been 30 known violations of underage gambling this year. The state can impose a maximum fine of $5,000 per incident.

Joe Weinberg, managing partner for Maryland Live casino, says casino operators will work toward zero tolerance at the 21-and-older establishment.

There is no state penalty for the young people who violate the policy.

New Smoking Ban Proposal in St.Joseph

From the St.Jo News Press

A St. Joseph group seeking to ban smoking in most public places is trying a new tactic to put the issue before voters.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports ( http://bit.ly/19LXdRL) members of Smoke-Free St. Joseph are gathering signatures from registered voters on a petition. They'll need nearly 2,200 certified signatures to get their proposal on a future ballot.

Smoke-Free St. Joseph began drafting the proposed ordinance after the City Council voted in May to drop all considerations of a smoking ban.

The group's proposal would ban smoking in all indoor public places except for 10 percent of hotel rooms and private clubs when no employees are present.

It also would allow smoking on the gambling floor of the St. Jo Frontier Casino until casinos in Jackson, Platte or Clay counties go smoke-free.
